If it were my home

What if the BP Oil Spill would have been teleported to where you are right now? Ifitweremyhome.com is an effort to visualize the spatial dimensions of (in this case water related) disasters, such as the BP Oil Spill and the Pakistan floods. Here’s an example, with the Pakistan Floods layered over Central Europe:

Another interesting feature of the website is a direct comparison of demographic data of selected countries with those of the one you’re in right now, the obvious aim being to show visitors that they’re probably relatively well off on a global scale. For example: I’d be likely to die 20 years earlier if I’d be a regular inhabitant of Ghana compared to my outlook here in Switzerland. I’m even more likely to die sooner in Liechtenstein, although I could earn twice as much as here. Granted, we’re faced with very raw statistics here, but a nice way to spark discussions, anyhow.
